About

Nonsense.

Choose a word. Any word to describe me. And nonsense would be it.

Who am I?

I’m a sister. A daughter. An animator. A medical student. A room mate. An ADMer. A student leader. Just another student. A drummer. A guitarist. A listener. A speaker. Driven. Driver. Photographer. Amateur. Friend. Enemy. Loved. Hated. Cared for. Despised. Here. There. Then. Now.

  1. Hi Ying,

Was surfing through the web when I chanced across your blog. Congrats on getting into Monash’s Gippsland Medical School. I am sure you must be very excited! Am I right in my understanding that you will be commencing medical school in 2010?

I am one of your seniors (I’ll be commencing my third year in 2010)… and I happen to be Singaporean too.

Just thought I’d extend my salutations and welcome you aboard. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Perhaps I can put you in touch with some of the other Singaporean at Gippsland.

  2. Hi Elroy!

Great to know I’m not the lone Singaporean there. Yeap, starting school in 23 more days and excitement is quickly turning into panic at my FOBS package.

Are there lots of other Singaporeans in Gippsland?

  3. Hi Ying,

I was told by the school that there are five Singaporeans in your year.

There are two in my cohort and a couple more in the Year B batch. The guy who runs the IT at the school, Andre Ng, is also Singaporean. Apart from those at the school, there are other Singaporeans (and Malaysians) living and working in and around Gippsland. The church that I went to in Traralgon was a pretty cosmopolitan one and the Singaporean and M’sian families would get together often for BBQs and to celebrate festivities like Chinese New Year. If you wish I can put you in touch with them so that you can have contacts both in the course and outside the university.

I say this because there is very little physical contact between the different batches given that Year A is the only year you will be spending full-time on campus… from Year B onwards, all your teaching will be done off-site at the local hospitals. There are a few Year A/B get together sessions but these are few and far in-between. I would suggest making and keeping close contacts with a few of your seniors as they would be a valuable source of reference for things like the FOBS, assignments and examination tips!!

Understandably, the Gippsland campus is situated quite a distance from Melbourne and hence you will find fewer Asian faces there compared to the city. Nevertheless, living in the country presents a fabulous opportunity to cast your eye far and wide (something we don’t get to do here in Singapore) and experience the lovely scenery and natural beauty that Gippsland has to offer… listen to me, already sounding like a tour guide.

OK, I don’t think I’ll clog up your blog space with too many words, best that you email me on my gmail account and we can chat more.

When does school commence for you and when do you fly?

    Elroy
